Learn Hangul Basics – Day 5: Understanding Double Final Consonants (겹받침)

Hello again! 😊 Yesterday, we learned about final consonant pronunciation rules and sound linking (연음 현상).

Today, we’re diving a little deeper into the world of double final consonants, called 겹받침 (gyeopbatchim) in Korean.

Once you understand how these work, reading and pronouncing Korean words will become much easier!

📌 1. What Are Double Final Consonants?

A double final consonant means two consonants appear together at the end of a syllable.

For example, look at these words: 닭 (chicken), 값 (price), 읽다 (to read).

✔ Examples of 겹받침 (Double Final Consonants):

ㄲ: 닭 (dak) – chicken

ㄳ: 값 (gap) – price

ㄶ: 많다 (manta) – many

ㄼ: 짧다 (jjalbda) – short

📌 2. Pronunciation Rules for Double Final Consonants

There are three main cases when it comes to pronouncing double final consonants:

① Case 1: Both consonants are pronounced

✔ Examples:

없다 → [업따] (eop-tta) – not exist

넓다 → [널따] (neol-tta) – wide

👉 In this case, the second consonant is pronounced strongly.

② Case 2: Only one consonant is pronounced

In most double consonants, only the first consonant is pronounced, and the second is silent.

✔ Examples:

닭 → [닥] (dak) – chicken

삶 → [삼] (sam) – life

값 → [갑] (gap) – price

👉 If no vowel follows, only the first consonant is pronounced.

③ Case 3: Sound linking happens (연음)

When a vowel follows the double consonant, the second consonant may move to the next syllable.

✔ Examples:

닭이 → [달기] (dal-gi) – chicken + subject marker

읽어요 → [일거요] (il-geo-yo) – I read

읊어요 → [을퍼요] (eul-peo-yo) – I recite

👉 This is a great example of sound linking (연음) in action!

📌 3. Practice Time – Let's Read Together!

Try reading the following words out loud:

✅ Only one consonant is pronounced:

1. 닭 → [닥]

2. 삶 → [삼]

3. 값 → [갑]

4. 읊다 → [읍따]

✅ Sound linking cases:

1. 닭이 → [달기]

2. 읽어요 → [일거요]

3. 읊어요 → [을퍼요]

4. 밝은 → [발근]

📌 4. Review & Homework

✔️ Double final consonants = two consonants at the end of a syllable

✔️ Sometimes both are pronounced, sometimes only the first one

✔️ If followed by a vowel, the second consonant may move (sound linking)

📌 💡 Tomorrow, we’ll learn about natural pronunciation and sound changes in Korean!

Great work today! Keep practicing, and see you in the next lesson. You got this! 💪😊
